I was just asked by the marketing folks at the Metroparks of the Toledo Area for permission to use one of my award-winning images from last year’s Celebrating Nature Through Photography contest. The photo of the rocky Fallen Timbers Rapids area of the Maumee River was taken in October, 2007 while the water level was fairly low. This area, located within Side Cut Metropark, is an amazing area to explore with a variety of interesting rock formations, plant life, and general scenic beauty.
From the Metroparks website: “The flat rocks that extend into the river between Maumee and Waterville are known as the Maumee River Ledges. Ledges are a rare form of a little-known habitat called an alvar, found in only a handful of places in the Great Lakes.”
